Style anthropology
Your style is the visual expression of your identity
I look at the world through style - through what we wear and how we ‘put ourselves together’. Style is personal: it communicates our values, affinities, and identities. But style doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s shaped, challenged, and amplified by fashion — the global industry that produces the clothes, campaigns, and cultural signals we draw from. Fashion sets the stage, but style is how each of us interprets and performs it in daily life.
Because of this interplay, what we wear tells us not only about individual taste, but also about the time we live in. Fashion is one of the world’s largest industries, with enormous social, economic, and cultural impact. Campaigns and media don’t just promote certain looks — they influence who gets represented, which communities gain visibility, and how identities are negotiated. This makes fashion and style inseparable from questions of labour, sustainability, power, and belonging. Together, they reveal how culture is produced and how societies imagine themselves.
As a style anthropologist, I explore the intersections of style and fashion. I write, teach at fashion and cultural institutions, conduct research, and consult. My work often involves connecting organisations with the right people and helping them refine their practices to better engage with culture and community.
